Getting Busy in the Kitchen Summary

With the start of a New Year, it is a great time to spend more time together as a family. One place that you can spend more time together is in the kitchen. At all school meeting, the following ideas were presented to the kids. Here is a summary:

  1. Designate kids as the Sous-chef, the person who is second in command to the chef in your house. He or she helps to oversee every aspect of the meal.
  2. Here are the steps to take to become the Sous-Chef:
  3. Find recipe(s)!
  • Look through cookbooks, magazines or even on-line
  • Choose one recipe or plan the whole meal.
  • Do this with the adult or your siblings or with a friend!
  1. Make a shopping list.
  • It is important to have all the right ingredients.
  1. When cooking from scratch, you will use lots of REAL FOOD (like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, dairy products, fish, poultry and meat. (Real food grows outside in a field or exists in nature.)
  • Kids will write down the ingredients on a list and you can double check it.
  1. Go to the supermarket!
  • If you can, go together as a family.
  • When you get home, have the kids help put the groceries away!
  1. Now COOK!
  • Remind kids to wash their hands and help to clean the work space.
  • Take out your recipe.
  • Get out cooking utensils, like pots, pans, measuring cups and spoons, bowls, spatulas, can openers etc.
  • Your kids can help by:
  1. Washing and measuring ingredients
  2. Retrieving spices and taking things in and out of the refrigerator
  3. Reading the recipe
  4. Setting or checking the timer for cooking times.
  5. Beating, stirring or mixing the ingredients and so on …
  6. Next is Clean up!
  • Put ingredients away
  • Load the dishwasher
  • Help to wipe up the counters
  • Dry and/or put away cooking utensils
  1. Now EAT!
  • Kids can help to set the table and fill glasses with water
  • Take out salt and pepper shakers, other condiments and carry things to the table.

Sit Down, Slow Down and Savor the Flavor of your hard work and eat your meal together!!!
